Parents and pupils of Victoria Primary School in Edinburgh were surprised by the launch of the school's new website, www.victoriaprimary.com, which CIVIC has developed as a Christmas gift.
Dating from 1844, Victoria Primary is the oldest school in Edinburgh, and it remains at the heart of the Newhaven community today.
But the ethos of the school is thoroughly modern, and while the building may be ancient, lessons are taught using the latest technology and teaching methods.
CIVIC has been at the heart of public life in Scotland for 10 years, but is better known for large scale projects such as www.sqa.org.uk, the redesign of www.scotland.gov.uk which is currently in progress and for residents of the Scottish Isles, www.airdiscountscheme.com.
This year CIVIC launched its 'CIVIC Pride' programme, which aims to improve public services through the development of free or open source technologies that will reduce the burden on the taxpayer, year on year.
Mark Steven of CIVIC said of the gift, “This seemed like a great fit for the CIVIC Pride programme: Christmas is really focussed around children, and we make websites, so doing something for a primary school in time for Christmas was perfect.”
Laura Thomson, Headteacher of Victoria Primary is delighted: “We are thrilled with our new website. This is often the first contact people have with our school and it’s great to have such a vibrant, professional site to reflect our thriving school. The school community is really looking forward to adding to the website to let everyone know about all the exciting activities we are involved in. We are very grateful to Civic for giving us their valuable time and continuing advice and expertise – we really appreciate our early Christmas present!”
The website features artwork by children at the school, and has been designed to appeal to children and adults alike.
Since its launch, the CIVIC Pride programme has released www.contentcontrol.com, an open source content system which is available for free and remains in continuous development. CIVIC are also about to release a free solution for compliance with EU cookie legislation, which will be enforced in the UK from April, a beta of which is available at www.civicuk.com/cookie-law.
