GDPR compliant version 8 of Cookie Control released
We are pleased to announce the release of Cookie Control v8, a version developed from the ground up to be compliant with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is a complete rewrite of Cookie Control’s codebase, and our aim was to make it more compact in size, faster and as user friendly as possible.
The key features of GDPR which we are addressing in this version are:
- Explicit user consent: the user will need to explicitly consent to the use of cookies before they can be placed in their computer.
- Categorisation of Cookies: the user can give their consent to one cookie category, and not consent to others.
- The user can consent or revoke consent at any time. The widget is always visible so that the user can change their cookie preferences.
These changes mean that the widget had to be, by definition, more obtrusive. With that in mind we tried to make it as eye-pleasing and elegant as possible, while at the same time being at the user’s disposal to make a quick and informed decision.
JavaScript has come a long way, and we decided to keep things simple and drop the jQuery dependency, thus making the widget significantly lighter. We implemented two themes available for everyone, and invite pro users to customise the widget to match their own branding. We serve the widget from a CDN this time, saving you from the need to upload it on your own site, thus making updates a simpler process.
We still offer a flexible API to tailor the widget to your specific needs, and add flexibility the means of geolocation and localisation. On top of that we offer the option to the user to completely opt-out of third party plugins, should you require that.
Our billing has changed to a subscription model. A pro user will be guaranteed to get prioritised support, and free updates for the duration of their subscription. Of course we still offer a free version which is compliant with GDPR.
